The presets built into Capture One are pretty good in comparison to what I have looked at. I downloaded their free samples and was not persuaded they did anything for me. Iirc, they also had adjustment tools to control other aspects of an image. There was another source of Capture One styles. Mostly you want to select areas of color you want to adjust (advanced color tool) or you want to adjust color for the highlights, midtones or shadows (separate dials in C1). Walk away and come back to it or, better yet, make a print and look at it in a couple days. At first, you will tend to go too far when you think you have dialed it down enough. Start by going too extreme so the changes and implications are obvious. Then use the tools in C1 to nudge things in the right direction.

Collect movie stills or pictures you like at first to inform your sense. Step 2: decide where you are going with the image. Step 1: get the color "correct" (for me, this means skintones) before you start grading. Most of what you want with color grading is to influence the color direction of certain aspects of the image. Why? For me, at least, color grading is heavily influenced by the specific image and a preset won't really save time. If you are looking for color grading, I would probably not get presets. If it works for you in either way, the purchase is worth considering. If you use it as a learning opportunity and invest the time, it also makes sense. So, if you do something like weddings or events, and you find a preset which works or, more likely, adjust one so it works for you, it can easily make sense.

The tools vary, but the ability to know what you want and how to get it transfers. But the skills transferred to C1, PS etc. Or I would notice one thing a preset did and figure out how that effect was achieved. But I did learn some things by figuring out how the presets I liked were put together and working backwards to separate what the preset was doing in bits. I have bought presets and just about never use them. The value of presets is that they save you time and help you quickly get a unified look across images or get to a useful starting point more rapidly. If the samples don't seem awesome applied to your images, walk away.

I would download the samples and see if they sing for you. If a preset is a faithful film recreation, the artistic sensibility comes from the film creator and the technical accuracy comes from the person implementing the preset. The value of a preset depends on the artistic sensibilities of the creator of the style and how well they have implemented the technical part to work across images.
This is true even for B&W as your starting point, even if that doesn't seem to make sense. You need to start with a good exposure and a properly color corrected image. So, style presets, are they worth it? I will address what I think about presets in general, which may help you with this and similar decisions.Ī preset will not "fix" an image.
